Expert offers quirky cleaning tips

Cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie has offered some tips on how people can keep their homes fresh and sparkling with a few household objects.

Lynsey Crombie, who goes under the name ‘Queen of Clean’ on Instagram, where she has 127,000 followers, recently appeared on This Morning to offer a number of tips on cheap and easy household cleaning, the Daily Mail reported.

Make the most of lemons

According to Lynsey, half a lemon and some bicarbonate of soda can be an effective combination for all sorts of cleaning jobs.

She described lemons as “one of my go-to products”, adding: “The beauty about them is the smell.”

One method is to sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda onto half a lemon and give it a small squeeze, which creates a useful solution for jobs such as wiping down dirty draining boards, removing hard water marks in the shower, and tackling limescale and soap scum.

Even when you’ve finished cleaning with the lemon, it can be placed in the dishwasher to fight bad smells and create a fresh, natural aroma.

Lynsey also had a tip for getting hold of lemons at the best possible price.

“What I do always advise is go to the supermarket later in the day when prices drop, so you’re not spending so much money on it,” she said.

Tea bags in trainers

Her trick for this is to put four tea bags in the shoes and place them under a radiator, which will help to bring out the natural deodorising properties of the tea.

If your trainers have some particularly stubborn stains, one effective way to whiten them is by giving them a scrub with toothpaste.

Ice cubes in the tumble dryer

She recommends popping the items in the tumble dryer, along with three or four ice cubes, and putting the dryer on for five to ten minutes.

This will reportedly create steam that will remove the creases from the clothes, saving you a tedious ironing job.

Mascara brushes and potato peel

Lynsey has even found a use for potato peels — cleaning cutlery. Simply rub the peel against knives, forks and spoons to get rid of stains.
