Top 10 Toxic Foods That You Should Avoid For A Healthy Diet
As medicine and science continue to evolve, experts learn more and more about how and why our body functions. We know how to cure a myriad of diseases and cures for the rest are in the making. Yet, the average person today has little to no knowledge of how the foods that they eat affect their bodies. Often taking the path of least resistance, we are swayed by fast food restaurants, soft drinks, sweets and ice-cream stands, ever consuming, without a thought for what this can do to us.
This has, in turn, given rise to a plethora of conflicting theories about dieting and nutrition, about what we should we eat and when. And while the various experts will continue to bicker about the details, some things have been proven almost universally bad and harmful for our health and wellbeing. In this article, I’ll be going over the top 10 foods that you should avoid if you want to have a healthy diet.
Before I jump right into it, please allow me to clarify that this article has been written with overall health and wellness in mind. I am not advocating a specific weight loss or weight gain plan, but rather a simpler and healthier way of life. Besides, once everything is said and done, weight gain and loss are mostly down to how much energy you consume in relation to how much you expend.
Number 1 — Vegetable Oils
Vegetable oils are one of the main culprits here, and they’re present in more dishes than you’d think.
“But veggies are good for my health, even you told me so!”. Yes, veggies are great for your body. Some vegetable oils aren’t even all that bad — Olive oil, for example, is very low in omega-6 contents.
Most of the processed and refined veggie oils, however, are a whole different deal. Hear me out.
Most vegetable oils are high in transferable fats and omega-6 acids, which can be very disruptive to your omega-3 ratios. Furthermore, they can cause all manner of problems, ranging from:
- inflammations
- high cholesterol
- heart disease
- weight gain
Furthermore, a large percentage of the products labelled simply as “vegetable oil”, will be made from genetically modified plants (especially corn, soy and canola).
Number 2 — Wheat products
By wheat products, I’m mostly referring to stuff that’s made out of hybridised wheat. This type of wheat almost always contains high levels of starch, a ton of gluten and little to no nutrients. For me, just like most people in the wellness field, gluten is a no go. I’d wholeheartedly recommend that you go gluten-free whenever possible.
Number 3 — Soy
Most soy products also come from genetically modified plants. While soy in and of itself won’t actively harm your body, I like to stay as far away from GMO products as possible.
Number 4 — Conventional Dairy products
Most conventional dairy products come from GMO-fed animals. A mere gallon of milk, purchased from your local store can contain more than 20 different chemicals and meds.
Number 5 — Corn
Corn, by itself, isn’t a dangerous type of food. Genetically modified corn, however, is another story — it’s straight up toxic to your body!
Number 6 — Conventional Meat
Before you jump the gun, allow me to elaborate. I’m not saying that all meat is bad. Grass-fed animal meats are actually pretty essential for the average healthy diet. Most store-bought meats that you’ll find, however, don’t come from grass-fed animals, but from ones raised on GMO products. A large portion of these animals have then been altered even further, by steroids and various growth hormones. Well it’s up to you (and, let’s be honest here — most of the time it is), you should aim to only consume meat from completely organic, grass-fed and humanely-raised animals.
Number 7 — White flour
Just like most wheat products, white flour can be highly inflammatory. Eating too many white flour products can lead to bloating, along with a plethora of other, less obvious issues.
Number 8 — Sugar
As you most certainly have heard by now, processed sugar is pretty bad for your body. But that doesn’t mean that taking a bite from a cookie will immediately cause damage — small amounts of sugar won’t really affect your body. I, for example, have a “chocolate day” once a week where I treat myself to a bit of tasty cocoa goodness. And, when the situation calls for it, I’ll have a slice of cake on special occasions.
Excessive consumption of processed sugar and binge-eating on the sweet stuff, however, can — and will — take their toll. Most experts in the field recommend avoiding sugary foods and snacks. Personally, I’d rather get my needed daily dose of sugar from natural sources, like fruits.
Number 9 — Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners can alter the bacteria in your gut, resulting in a whole host of digestive issues. I’d say that you should stay away from them unless advised otherwise by a certified medical professional.
Number 10 — Tap Water
Well, this one most likely isn’t news to you, but it’s an important point to mention either way. Tap water is overloaded with fluoride and chlorine. Fluoride can very quickly decimate the probiotics in your body, which can be devastating to your immune system.
And there you have it folks — my list of 10 foods that you should stay away from. As always, I’d like to urge you to do your own research as well — I’m merely giving you a quick rundown of the situation and, if you’re interested, there’s a lot more to learn on the topic! Everything that I share on the pages of my blog is based on my research and personal experience, but it never hurts to check things out on your own as well.
Did you know about the adverse effects of all the foods I mentioned? Do you have your own list of things that you avoid consuming? Give me your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
Till next time stay green and clean!
